Jesse G.

Jesse earned her Bachelor of Arts in political science, with minors in business administration and entrepreneurship, from the University of Florida. After working in advertising sales, she quickly realized her heart was more aligned with teaching, so she returned to school at Florida State College at Jacksonville and received her teaching degree.

Jesse’s specialties include all subjects at the elementary level (in particular, literacy and mathematics) and creating targeted intervention plans for learners. She has worked successfully with students who have processing, decoding, auditory, and behavioural disorders, as well as those with dysgraphia and dyslexia. She is currently familiar with the Quebec provincial competencies (province-wide) from kindergarten to grade 6.

Jesse started her teaching career, in Florida (U.S.), by traveling to different hospitals through her district’s homebound program to teach reading, math, science, and history (grades 1-6) to students who were absent from school due to medical reasons.

During her time in the Duval County Public Schools District-Operated Programs, Jesse was also a middle school integrated and K-9 Exceptional Student Education teacher, where she designed and delivered appropriate grade-level math and language arts lessons that accommodated mixed-ability groups. She next taught for years at Daniels Run Elementary School in Virginia, where she routinely worked with the reading specialist and instructional coach to streamline the grade-level team’s curriculum.

As the lead language arts teacher and response to intervention coordinator, she (along with her fellow teachers) applied guided reading, writing, and math approaches to meet students at their personal level and help them advance on their targeted learning trajectory. Jesse taught in an inclusive classroom where she instructed students who had Individualized Education Program documentation as well as English language learners. She routinely worked with special education teachers to draft IEPs and student goals.

She was asked to join the Virginia Department of Education’s Multisensory Structured Language pilot program to learn instructional practices in order to deliver the Orton-Gillingham method to learners who have dyslexia. During the pilot program, Jesse participated in a study group for two years in order to monitor students’ progress and gain a solid understanding of the instructional style of Orton-Gillingham.

During her time in Quebec, before becoming a member of the Book Dumpling team, she instructed adult learners in reading and writing at RECLAIM Literacy Center.

Jesse’s strength lies in her belief that each child’s education experience wields its own power, and that no one can take that away from them. She has tutored privately for years, including students from kindergarten through grade 6 (all types of learners) and thoroughly enjoys adapting to everyone’s passions and learning style while encouraging lifelong learning and skills for literacy development.
